Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in Peru for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, where he is meeting with South American leaders, including Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and Chilean President Gabriel Boric, to discuss trade and economic cooperation.
Trudeau is also expected to have informal talks with other leaders on the sidelines of the summit, especially considering the growing influence of China, led by President Xi Jinping, in the region. China has been actively working to expand its ties with South America.
APEC’s goal is to reduce trade barriers and foster economic growth across the Pacific Rim, but rising protectionism, particularly with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs, is creating challenges for the summit’s objectives.
A key focus at the summit has been maintaining rules-based trade despite the rise in protectionist policies. Leaders are trying to find ways to navigate these challenges while protecting their economic interests.
Trudeau will hold a press conference later today with Trade Minister Mary Ng at 3:30 p.m. Ottawa time to address Canada’s position on global trade issues and the summit’s discussions.
