Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and French President Emmanuel Macron have adopted a joint declaration in which, among other things, Paris expresses its support for Ukraine’s move towards NATO membership.
According to the declaration, “within NATO, France continues to focus on direct support to Ukraine.”
At the same time, “France fully supports the Ukraine-NATO Commission as a platform to further strengthen and expand ongoing cooperation to help Ukraine move towards a Euro-Atlantic family in line with the Bucharest Declaration.”
As you know, the mentioned declaration determines Ukraine’s path to full membership – but through the stage of the Membership Action Plan, which now does not satisfy Kyiv. As a separate paragraph, the declaration notes that “Ukraine and France are looking forward to the resolution of these issues at the NATO summit in Vilnius in July 2023.”
Igor Zhovkva, deputy head of the Presidential Office , commented on the document, noting that the adoption of a declaration “with a similar wording regarding NATO was simply impossible before.”
“The joint declaration made it possible to strengthen support for Ukraine in the Euro-Atlantic direction with another weighty voice,” Zhovkva said.
As part of a tour of European capitals this weekend, President Volodymyr Zelensky adopted declarations with similar wording from the leaders of Italy and Germany.
