CAR FIRE NETS ARREST

Thursday, August 26, 2010, at approximately 10:41 a.m. the 1994 Honda Accord belonging to Casandra Trafficano, 30, of Gloster, caught fire near the trunk area at the bumper on Main Street of Liberty in front of the future L/A Fitness and Bargain Furniture. The fire was extinguished in short time, leaving the vehicle ready for towing by Blalock’s Body Shop. Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, Liberty Police Department and Emergency Management aided in containing and extinguishing the fire, along with the assistance of Angola Guard Brad Sterling.

CENTREVILLE ACADEMY COACH ARRESTED

Cory Britt, 36-year-old Centreville Academy girls’ basketball coach, of Natchez, was arrested by the Amite County Sheriff’s Department Monday, August 30, 2010, for allegedly statutory rape. Sheriff Perkins stated they were still receiving information and this is still an open investigation. Amite County Sheriff’s Department and the Centreville Police Department are conducting the investigation. No further details were available at the time of this article.

WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM SET FOR AMITE COUNTY

Jean Marie Hill, Executive Director of Warren Washington Issaquena Community Action Agency of Greenville, MS, proposed a weatherization program for the elderly of Amite County. The weatherization assistance program assists income-eligible families and individuals by reducing their heating/cooling costs and improving the safety of their homes through energy efficiency measures. The energy costs savings can be significant with an average savings in excess of 20%.

BUDGET HEARING HELD FOR LIBERTY

On Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at 12:00 noon the Town of Liberty held a budget hearing. There will be no increases in millage this year. Also, there will be no raises given to the employees.

SPICE BAN IN AMITE COUNTY

Along with many of the counties in Mississippi, the ban on the incense “spice” has swept through like a wildfire. This comes after officials have found that people are using it in place of marijuana.
Amite County has joined the ban on the incense, and will enforce the law when it comes to people using and possessing the incense illegally. This ordiance also includes all municipalities in the county.

Members of the Amite County Training School Class of 1960 held their 50th reunion July 23-25.
Events included a program at the Gloster Elementary School auditorium on July 23, a banquet at the Harrison Building in Liberty on the 24th, and morning worship on July 25 at Sharon Chapel C.M.E. Church in Gloster.

Kelli Anne Terrell, daughter of Andy and Chris Terrell of Summit and granddaughter of Carlene Terrell of Liberty and the late Maurice Terrell recently participated in the Mississippi Junior Miss Scholarship Program in Meridian. Kelli Anne is Pike County’s Jr Miss 2011. Junior Miss is a national scholarship program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience culminating in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments.

For those of you that weren’t able to attend the Liberty Stampede Rodeo Friday or Saturday night, August 13 & 14, 2010, we would like to inform you that it was a great success.
The night began with the crowd filtering in to fill the bleachers with much anticipation of what the night held in store for them. The smell of the freshly turned sod added to the scents of livestock filling the air so all were alert and ready to see some great action.
