Kylie Jenner faced backlash on social media over the weekend after hosting a party inspired by “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the novel and TV series that portrays a patriarchal society where fertile women are forced into servitude.
Many Twitter users criticized the reality TV star’s themed party, saying it was tone-deaf considering the restrictive abortion policies that have been signed into law by some states this year.
The outrage ensued after Jenner shared videos and images of her and her friends wearing red robes and white bonnets.
“Praise be ladies,” Jenner says in one of the videos shared on Instagram. “Welcome. We’re going to watch the first episode.”
HuffPost reported that the party included “Praise Be vodka” and “Under His Eyes tequila” that were served by women acting as Marthas, domestic servants in the Hulu series based on Margaret Atwood’s book.
The premiere of the show’s third season was also apparently screened during the party, HuffPost noted.
Bitch Media cofounder Andi Zeisler knocked the themed party, tweeting on Sunday, “can someone please reassure me that ‘Kylie Jenner’s Handmaid’s Tale–Themed Party’ is a phrase I hallucinated on this festering grease trap of a hellsite.”

“Kylie Jenner hosting a Handmaid’s Tale themed birthday party is actually a perfect analogy for how rich people will be perfectly fine if Roe v. Wade is overturned,” Another Twitter user, Natalie Green, wrote.
Kylie Jenner hosting a Handmaid’s Tale themed birthday party is actually a perfect analogy for how rich people will be perfectly fine if Roe v. Wade is overturned. They’ll always find a way to afford and access abortion—low income folks won’t. #StopTheBans

Many echoed those remarks in their criticism. But others voiced support for the makeup mogul, with one Twitter user saying that people should let the “girl have fun.”
Kylie Jenner throwing her friend a Handmaid’s Tale themed birthday party complete with robes, Gilead flags, “Praised be” vodka and “Under his eye” tequila is so tone deaf, at any time, but especially when women’s rights and autonomy are particularly under attack. Disheartening.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” trended on Twitter in May after Alabama lawmakers passed a bill that would would ban almost all abortions in the state. 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) invoked the series while denouncing the state policy.
“Threatening to punish doctors who provide abortion care with up to 99 years of jail time,” the California senator wrote in a May fundraising email. “This isn’t a scene from The Handmaid’s Tale. This is happening in Alabama — in our country — in the year 2019.”
