VIRGINIA HYER LEDDY
Funeral services were held Friday, July 16, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at McReynolds-Nave & Larson Chapel in Clarksville for Virginia Hyer Leddy, 80, a native of Amite County and resident of Clarksville. Rev. Lenoir Culbertson officiated. Burial was in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West in Hopkinsville, Kentucky.
Mrs. Leddy passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2010, at her residence.
Born July 30, 1929, in Amite County, Mrs. Leddy was the only child of Cecil Guy Hyer and Robbie Cockerham Hyer, both deceased.
Upon her husband’s retirement from the Army, Mrs. Leddy was an active volunteer in many outlets in this, their last assignment. They came to Clarksville in1990 from an 18-year assignment at the Pentagon, where Col. Leddy was in the Surgeon General’s Office.
Mrs. Leddy was an administrative assistant to the Vice President of Nursing Department of Goodwin House, an Episcopal retirement and long-term care facility in Alexandria, Virginia. She worked there 12 years before moving to Clarksville. During her husband’s career, Mrs. Leddy served as a national officer of the Women’s Auxiliary to the American Optometric Association.
Upon retirement, Mrs. Leddy volunteered and was active in Madison Street United Methodist Church, president of MSUMW, served on the board of trustees for the Catholic Men’s Home, board of trustees for Habitat for Humanity, Ladies Association of the Clarksville County Club, Clarksville Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, was chairman of Community Concert Series, Loaves and Fishes, and volunteered at Clarksville Museum. She was a voting poll worker for several years.
At age ten, Mrs. Leddy’s family moved from Amite County to McComb. She was popular in high school and was class treasurer in grades 10 to 12. She was a cheerleader, received the DAR Good Citizenship Award and the DeMalay Sweetheart Award. She was selected McComb’s Miss Hospitality, which was sponsored through the Lions Club.
After graduating from McComb High School, Mrs. Leddy and her best friend attended Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson, where she again enjoyed popularity as a cheerleader and was named most beautiful. She was a member of the International Relations Club, Masque and Wig Drama Group, YWCA, and Wesley Foundation Council.
Mrs. Leddy and her husband of sixty years met as sophomores in high school. It was a romance that continued through the years.
After Mr. Leddy’s graduation from Southern College of Optometry, he practiced his profession in Centreville for three years before entering the Army as a first lieutenant. Their thirty-two years of military service is remembered as a glorious long vacation. They lived in Ft. Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Ft. Benning in Columbus, Georgia, 156th General Hospital in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, Sandia Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the Pentagon Clinic assigned to Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, D.C. At each of her husband’s assignments, Mrs. Leddy was active in the Officer’s Wives Club and a Red Cross Gray Lady. Wherever she lived, she served as officer in the Medical Wives Group and Parent Teacher Association.
Mrs. Leddy is survived by her husband, John T. Leddy; two daughters, Angela and Paula; two sons, John and Andy; and seven grandchildren.
