CAR FIRE NETS ARREST

Thursday, August 26, 2010, at approximately 10:41 a.m. the 1994 Honda Accord belonging to Casandra Trafficano, 30, of Gloster, caught fire near the trunk area at the bumper on Main Street of Liberty in front of the future L/A Fitness and Bargain Furniture. The fire was extinguished in short time, leaving the vehicle ready for towing by Blalock’s Body Shop. Liberty Volunteer Fire Department, Liberty Police Department and Emergency Management aided in containing and extinguishing the fire, along with the assistance of Angola Guard Brad Sterling.

CENTREVILLE ACADEMY COACH ARRESTED

Cory Britt, 36-year-old Centreville Academy girls’ basketball coach, of Natchez, was arrested by the Amite County Sheriff’s Department Monday, August 30, 2010, for allegedly statutory rape. Sheriff Perkins stated they were still receiving information and this is still an open investigation. Amite County Sheriff’s Department and the Centreville Police Department are conducting the investigation. No further details were available at the time of this article.

WEATHERIZATION PROGRAM SET FOR AMITE COUNTY

Jean Marie Hill, Executive Director of Warren Washington Issaquena Community Action Agency of Greenville, MS, proposed a weatherization program for the elderly of Amite County. The weatherization assistance program assists income-eligible families and individuals by reducing their heating/cooling costs and improving the safety of their homes through energy efficiency measures. The energy costs savings can be significant with an average savings in excess of 20%.

BUDGET HEARING HELD FOR LIBERTY

On Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at 12:00 noon the Town of Liberty held a budget hearing. There will be no increases in millage this year. Also, there will be no raises given to the employees.

SPICE BAN IN AMITE COUNTY

Along with many of the counties in Mississippi, the ban on the incense “spice” has swept through like a wildfire. This comes after officials have found that people are using it in place of marijuana.
Amite County has joined the ban on the incense, and will enforce the law when it comes to people using and possessing the incense illegally. This ordiance also includes all municipalities in the county.

CHAMBER TO MEET

The Liberty Area Chamber of Commerce will meet Monday, September 13, 2010 at noon at the Bell, Book and Candle in Liberty. The cost for the meal will be $8.00 person. Members are urged to attend and guests are also invited.
Speakers for the meeting will be Richard Sessions, Headmaster at Amite School Center and Robert McDaniel, Principal at Amite County High School.

MARY DRAKE SWOOPE

Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 25, 2010, at 10:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, EPC for Mary Drake Swoope, 69. Rev. Steve Davis officiated.
Mrs. Swoope passed away Sunday, August 22, 2010, at Darlington Oakes in Verona.
Born August 8, 1941, in Vicksburg, Mrs. Swoope was the daughter of the late Alexander Alford Batton and Isabella Person Drake.
Mrs. Swoope was a retired teacher from the Lowndes County school. She was on the Board of Directors of MEA, and was a member of Aberdeen Jr. Auxiliary, and West Point Club. She was also a member of the DAR in Port Gibson, MS.

WIILIE WEATHERSPOON

Funeral services were held Tuesday, August 24, 2010, at 11:00 a.m at Newman Funeral Home in Centreville for Willie Weatherspoon, 60, of Centreville. Rev. Maxine Price officiated. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Mr. Weatherspoon passed away Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville.
born July 16, 1950, Mr. Weatherspoon was the son of Jessie Weatherspoon Sr. and Charlotte Weatherspoon, both deceased.
Mr. Weatherspoon was a graduate of Wilkinson County High School, an employee of the town of Centreville and a painter by trade.

MARJORIE J. CARRAWAY

Memorial service were held Saturday, August 21, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at Tangipahoa Baptist Church for Marjorie J. Carraway, 85, of the Tangipahoa Community. Rev. Mike Morris officiated.
Mrs. Carraway passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2010, at Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb.
Born December 17, 1924, in Clifton, New Jersey, Mrs. Carraway was the daughter of Oker and Nellie Rose DeYager, both deceased.
